What is this medicine used to treat?

my derm prescribed me cefuroxime for my acne (250mg once daily...but he might move me up to twice daily) anyway, he said it should really work instantly. i've been on it for 5 days and i know i'm not gonna have a major improvement over night, but i'm expecting it to get a little better soon. i was wondering, will i see a noticeable difference in 3 weeks? my prom is in 3 weeks and i'm hoping its a lot better by then. (i'm also washing my face and using topical stuff and all that crap, but i'm really relying on this antibiotic. so please don't tell me to try proactive or neutrogena stuff)

I've had a terrible sore throat for a little over a week now. A few days ago I went to a nurse practitioner who tested me for strep (negative) and said it was just viral. When It got worse, I saw a doctor who immediately told me it was mono. My mono test was also negative but the Dr. started me on Prednisone and an antibiotic (cefuroxime axetil). I took both of those at about 1 pm today. By 10 pm tonight, I'm feeling great, almost all of the phlegm in my throat is gone and the tonsils are significantly less swollen. Could this be due to the Prednisone or the antibiotic or both? It's such a drastic difference from what I felt like this morning, and I'm wondering if what they considered a false negative for the mono test was true or not. The sore throat was severe, and my tonsils were about the size of golf balls. I could barely breath and not sleep, and was spitting to avoid swallowing, which was extremely painful. I've had my fair share of sore throats in my life, but this was beyond the most painful thing I have experienced.
