Albuterol FAQ

What has your experience been using Advair for your child's asthma?

My daughter has been seeing an allergy and asthma doctor for 6 weeks and her allergies that would cause her to wheeze had gotten better, at first. Then she started having a cough that wouldn't go away. She has seasonal allergies and wheezing and this year she has been going to her dads who lives in the country and every time she comes back she has allergy and asthma symptoms. I took her to her general doctor and he said she had pneumonia and gave her antibiotics and said she was ok to go to school. We went to see her allergy doc and I told him I stopped giving her the advair because she was coughing so much while using it. I got scolded for stopping and than he told me to keep giving it to her. Well I gave it to her for 4 or 5 days and she started having coughing fits where she couldn't breathe like her lungs would close up on her. So I stopped giving her the advair but kept giving her her allergy medicine and albuterol inhaler. We went to the allergy doc a third time 3 weeks later and he raised the dose on her advair even after I told him she would cough still. I gave it to her twice a day for 5 days and she has had 2 coughing fits in one day. I thought I was going to have to call 911 cause she couldn't breathe it was the worst one yet. I am through giving her advair!

Inhalers for infants....?

My granddaughter was diagnosed with a very minor case of Laryngomalacia at 2 months old and has been following a pulmonologist since. She is turning 8 months old now. She went to her 6 month checkup at her pediatrician and they noticed she sounded a little raspy when breathing. It just started a week or so before and we figured it would be addressed during this appointment since the baby was not in any stress, or had fevers. She just simply sounded raspy. They said come back in a few weeks if it doesn't clear up because they were suspecting allergies. They heard nothing in the lungs. No wheezing, no retracting. Three weeks later, we had her seen at a local express clinic for this since we couldn't get an appointment with her doctor. They said it wasn't in her lungs either and said maybe it was a cold? Again, no wheezing and no retracting. They were uncertain about what to say about the allergy thing because it's hard to tell in infants and they are not pediatricians. Now last month we had a routine follow up at the pulmonologist office. She had been sounding like this now for about a month. The doctor there heard the same thing the other doctors heard and said it wasn't in the lungs either but she was going to treat her as if it were. She kind of shrugged off the allergy thing also. The baby was prescribed Prednisolone, Loratidine, and Albuterol and Flovent inhalers with a spacer. The instructions were to use the all the medicines together for the next 5 days (varied in times a day to take) and if there is no improvement that I must call back. This was highly stressed about calling back! So, there was no improvement within 7 days. This ran through the weekend so the 5th day came on a Saturday. My daughter called on that Monday and got a nurse who said it was the Laryngomalacia and just continue the Flovent as maintenance and keep her follow up appointment in 6 months. That didn't sound right because they stressed for me to make sure I got ahold of them if this combo didn't work and show improvement within 5 days. Also, I can't see what Flovent would have to do with Laryngomalacia. I called the next day and got another nurse who said let me check the chart and call you back. She said the same as the other. Stay on the Flovent until she comes back to see them. My question to her was what is the Flovent going to do over the next few months that it hasn't done yet. She assured me we would see improvements with the Flovent in time. Frustrated, I called and asked the pharmacist where I got the medicines filled about the Flovent use. He told me that if the Flovent didn't work in the 5 days with the other meds it probably won't work with or without the other meds. Am I crazy? Has anyone heard of an infant staying on Flovent for 'maintenance' when she isn't wheezing AND it hasn't helped anyway? I would also think if it was allergies, the Loratadine (Claratin) should have helped especially being combined with the steroids and inhalers. This is why I haven't called back and scheduled with the pediatrician. I'm considering calling to move her pulmonology appointment up, but wanted to hear what others have to say about the use of Flovent in infants! This way I can be prepared with questions when I go.

Should I use an inhaler or should I try to beat the asthma? Will I do damage to my body if I try to beat it?

I used to use an albuterol inhaler all the time for my asthma when I was little because I would get very wheezy, and I had to be hospitalized twice when I was 4 and 10. Now I am 18 and I haven't used my inhaler since I was about 12 - not because the symptoms went away but because I haven't been exercising. (Bad, I know). I've recently taken up jogging a few times a week without using my inhaler, and every time after I jog I get an uncomfortable tightness feeling in the center of my upper-chest area just below my collar bone and excess mucus in my throat, but no wheezing. So, if I continue to not use my inhaler and put up with the discomfort every time I jog, will the discomfort eventually get better - sort of like I've beaten my asthma? Or by not using my inhaler am I doing damage to my respiratory structures? I hear about things like COPD where people have permanently compromised alveoli and I don't want that to be me!

My mom has been coughing for 2 weeks?

My mom has been coughing for two weeks. After a week I took her to the doctor who said she has asthma. They gave her medicine (albuterol inhaler and liquid, advair, coughing medicine, antibiotics and anti-inflammatory pills). She has been taking them and nothing has stopped the cough. Then i took her to the ER and they took a chest xray and they said she was fine. No illness. They said she must have a viral infection (a cold) and because she is a chronic smoker (smoking for over 50 years) that could be delaying her recovery. So they said to continue to drink her medicines. My mom is 64, is this normal? I'm still worried, even though the doctor said she is fine. What can I do? Should I just wait and see if it goes away?

smoking ban! what do you think? if you like the ban give this a star?

i live in NC and the bill was just passed that states: you cant smoke in restaurants and bars. My friend over here is having a temper tantrum bc she says the government is taking away private businesses rights. i like the ban because i have really bad asthma and everytime i have to walk into smoke i start wheezing, choking and having to take albuterol, pulmicort and when it gets really bad i have to go to the doctor to be hooked up to this breathing treatment machine. I am so glad they are banning smoking in public places so now i can enjoy my meal without having my lungs collapse on me. What do you think? is the government really trying to take away private ownership rights? please give fairtax a thumbs down.... she is my friend im talking about in the question
